I took it as a compliment (even though I’m not sure it was meant as one) when our subject said “God. Doing a photo shoot with you is like working on Ikebana or something”. Luckily he was still smiling when I finally took the teacup that was in the frame out of the shot, after already taking away a lamp that he really liked as well as a vase of flowers, which I put there earlier. It’s true I can sometimes get a bit obsessive and crazy when composing a frame. Andre Balaz is one of many extremely successful people I have photographed recently. He is an owner of such hotels as the Standard, the Mercer and the Chateau Marmont. His black shoes were shiny, and his white shirt was as white and crisp as it gets. As a part of this T magazine assignment, I got to visit Locusts-on-Hudson which is a beautiful historic villa up in Hudson owned by Andre Balaz. It was a nice day hanging out with the chickens and tasting the fresh shiso leaf from the organic farm between the photo shoots.
