Agnes Gund is an art patron, philanthropist, art collector and advocate for arts education. While I was setting up lights at her Upper East Side home, I was listening in on her interview. She was talking about the importance of art being appreciated and enjoyed by the masses, not just the wealthy few. I overheard her say something like, “great design is art”, which has been hovering in my mind ever since, because have been thinking about the relationship between art and design a lot lately. Agnes was really lovely and honest in a front of the camera. While we were shooting, she kept on talking to me about an opera singer she saw recently, and even though she was following my instructions, she was in her own world in a good way. She was really lovely and at the same time remained vulnerable in front of the camera without putting on a typical public relation smile. Photographed for Surface #105 / Legends At Work.
